One Laptop Per Child’s XO laptop

Heard about the $100 laptop yet? It’s no myth. The organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), chaired by MIT Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte, has been offering their XO laptop for $100 to children in underdeveloped countries since 2005.

The great news is, for a limited time, you can now get your own! To spread visibility of the OLPC’s mission, the organization just announced its “Give 1, Get 1” laptop program. From November 12-26, consumers can purchase two of their XO laptops for $399 – one to keep, and one to be donated to a child in a developing country.

Some features of the XO laptop:
• 802.11b/g/s wireless LAN
• 3 USB ports
• 1 GB flash memory
• Microphone, built-in video camera
• Linux operating system
• Low power consumption with optional hand/foot powered crank generator
• Sleek, contemporary look – and it’s green!!

If your math is correct, it still seems to be a myth. Looks more like a $200 laptop.

Great point Doug. I should clarify that the program started out as a $100 laptop program for children in underdeveloped countries, but the “Give 1, Get 1″ program is a bit different –two for $399, which is, yes, a $200 laptop for us… still not a bad price though, right?

I read that the goal of the program is to eventually get the cost down to $100 per lap top but because production numbers are still fairly low, the price has not yet come down. This is one promotion that will help this organization achieve larger production numbers and help bring the cost down.

    IS THIS PROGRAM OVER?

Yes, Melanie. I’m afraid the give one, get one program is over — but you can still purchase their laptops and contribute! Just click on the link within the post and you’ll be taken to their web site.
