If you’re saying bah-humbug to buying this holiday season, you’re in great company! This holiday season, I plan on doing as much do-it-yourself holiday shopping and decorating as possible. Want to jump on my miserly (I mean resourceful) bandwagon this Christmas? Check out some of these fantastic ways to make cheap holiday presents and decorations – without sacrificing quality.

Make your own Christmas Wreath

Watch this great video and make your own!

Christmas Alterna-tree

I love these! They’re made from CDs!

Instructions courtesy of ReadyMade Magazine:

  1. Glue the discs to a piece of cardboard or foam board in the shape of an evergreen.
  2. Punch holes in the cardboard backing through the middle of each CD, and push mini-lights through from the back (extra points if you use energy efficient LEDs).
  3. Hang the tree and plug in the lights.
  4. Rock around your [recycled] Christmas tree

Decorate Your Own Festive Plates

Holiday dining never looked so good!

Materials:
Transparent glass plate with no design
Peel ‘n’ EtchB. stencil, poinsettia design
Armour EtchB. glass-etching cream
Pebeo Porcelaine 150B. paint in red, yellow and green
Solvent-based cleaner

Festive Candle Centerpiece

Placing candles of different lengths in gold or silver candle holders make a simple and attractive centerpiece. Add a few cinnamon sticks, pinecones or cranberries on the tray for an added holiday feel. If you can’t light a fire this year, place several candles in your fireplace for a nice cozy holiday hazard-free ambience.

Christmas Card Garland

Now what to do with all those Christmas cards you have? You could display them the traditional way on shelves or tables but this year how about being a little unconventional? Simply gather all your Christmas cards and a few long pieces of ribbon then staple the cards to the ribbon and hang your Christmas card garland any place you normally would hang garlands, in doorways, along banisters, on a fireplace, etc. These eco-friendly Christmas decorations won’t cost you anything and will make your home look very trendy.
