Debbie Phelps and Olympic Star and Son Michael Phelps
by: ss_shopgirl
With Michael Phelps being all the rage right now as a 14-time Olympic gold medalist, it’s no wonder that he’s also turned into Speedo’s celebrity endorser, receiving a $1 million bonus from the company for winning 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympic games.
But did you know that his mother, Debbie Phelps, also has become somewhat of a style icon?
It’s true. The popular women’s clothing store Chico’s has devoted an entire section of their site to Debbie Phelps called, you guessed it, The Debbie Phelps Collection.
Apparently she’s a huge fan of Chico’s clothing, and unintentionally (meaning not endorsed by Chico’s) wore multiple pieces from the store throughout the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Although this quote from Debbie Phelps sounds suspiciously like endorsement:
Before I left for Beijing, I went to Chico’s and picked out my entire
wardrobe for the trip. I knew I was going to need to be prepared for a variety
of events, activities and climates so I picked key pieces that I could mix and
match, dress up, and dress down. That’s what I love about Chico’s; their
clothes aren’t only well made but also great for travel. They drape
beautifully, don’t cling, and flatter all body types. I’m a jewelry person,
so I love that you can change the accessories and have an entirely new look.
It’s fun. I love Chico’s.
Hmm…I guess entrepreneurialism runs in the family. Anyhow, take a look at these pieces from the collection and tell me what you think…

I think she’s beautiful and it does not surprise me at all that she chose Chico’s to pick out stylish pieces to travel with. Chico’s has very versatile clothing. I love Chico’s too!

Let me be the first then, Debbie. I, too, am a huge CHICO’S fan. My husband is the reason. I was shopping for a dress to wear to our nephew’s wedding in northern France in May of 2005. Claus pointed to “that store over there” as a possibility. I told him I’d heard about CHICO’S from our daughter, a buyer at SEARS corporate in Hoffman Estates whose boss wore nothing but CHICO’S. We walked in and I immediately was drawn to the Traveler’s collection – comfortable, no wrinkle, sleek, perfect for this trip. I bought the basic black outfit with skirt, several coloful tops and jackets and the wonderful accessories that matched perfectly. I admittedly did have to learn about the CHICO’S sizing system. I’d never worn a Size 2 in my life!
I am Executive Director of the Colorado P.E.O. Chapter House in Colorado Springs, CO. My job requires that I look professional each day as does yours. I’m happy that I can be comfortable as well. The beauty of the CHICO’S designs are that they can so easily be mixed and matched. Love those jackets!
One of our residents (average age of these medically independent ladies is 83) is also a CHICO’S fan. She realized the second night (I believe it was) that you were wearing the CHICO’S jacket that I had just purchased and worn the day before (the Rouge Geo Print). She wondered which of us had called the other! I have the No Tummy pants and the Contemporary tank tops in a variety of colors by now.
We thoroughly enjoyed the first 10 days or so of the Olympics as we watched Michael bring the record down in swimming. He’s a remarkably modest winner, too. A great role model. He has an admirable goal as well (FOX News): to elevate swimming as Tiger Woods has done with golf as a sport. Of course, we’ve living in a beautiful part of the country that happens to have an Olympic Training Center, too. Hope you can visit sometime. The Colorado P.E.O. Chapter House is just around the corner from the Broadmoor Hotel, a landmark here since 1918.
Best to you, Michael, and the rest of your family. Keep up your good work at the school. Incidentally, P.E.O. is all about promoting women’s education and philanthropy. Please check out its international website: http://www.peointernational.org. It’s been around since 1869.
Long live CHICO’S!
Most sincerely,

P.S. The CHICO’S store that I frequent the most is the one in the Briargate Mall here in Colorado Springs.

Way to go Ms. Phelps and Chico! Here is to prove that women in America don’t have to look like Barbie to be beautiful and sophisticated. Ms. Phelps looked elegant and yet not at all like a stereotypical school pri ncipal. I’ve never been to Chico’s, but I’ll check it out now!

She is right. Chico’s jackets are fun because you can wear a sequined embellished jacket with jeans for a casual look or you can wear it with a skirt for a dressier look. What fun ! Chico’s clothes were perfect for Debbie’s trip to the Olympics. And oh how comfortable! If you are every uncertain what to wear to an event or party…wear a Chico’s jacket. Every day I receive compliments on my Chico’s clothes. I live in Roswell, GA & have 5 Chico’s stores within 5 to 15 miles from my house and shop at everyone of them ! Go Chico’s! Thank you Debbie for wanting to shine, right along side your son !
