Right now, there’s snow, ice and blustery winds outside my window. The temperature is reading 23 degrees. Did I mention how much I despise winter? You get the picture. Though I’m staying put this year (February is shaping up to be the cruelest month for sure), it doesn’t mean I can’t escape. I click on the St. Barth’s webcam every free moment I get. After a good look, here’s what I picture in my mind: Me, in a bikini, on a cushy lounge chair, lubed up with coconut-infused sunscreen, listening to the gentle breezes and chirpy birds, while waiting for the beach concierge, Francois, to bring me a planter’s punch (yes, sans skimpy bikini, this was reality for me a couple of years ago–damn economy!).
Ever since I visited St Barth’s I’ve been hoarding a lovely, bubbly Calypso perfume I picked up there. The notes of mimosa, sweet jasmine blended with a hint of warm musk are the right mix of tropical, breezy and lush, just like the island. Although I would put it in a light summer-y scent category, I use it this time of year to remind me of that heady time, when the only care I had was where we were going to have a wine and lobster lunch. I spritz it on and instantly, I get the strength to push through six more weeks of winter dismalness. Goes to show you island time is more a state of mind than a place–certainly true for me! Christiane Celle Calypso Mimosa Perfume, $85.

My favorite guilt free “island escape” are TerraNova’s Pikake products. I discovered them while vacationing in Hawaii, and the scent reminds me of the fresh pikake leis you find all over the islands. Whenever I get the winter doldrums, I spritz on the Pikake Cologne and close my eyes to image myself walking along the rugged coast of Kauai! It’s divine.
