With spring just around the corner (March 20), I’m getting inspired to start some serious decorating. My husband and I moved into our place just over a year ago, and there are a few rooms that haven’t yet seen a paint brush. Some walls are white and some are a beige that borders on boring, so I’m ready to jazz them up with a more sophisticated color palette.

This season, color experts it’s trendy to get inspired by your locality. Ideas can come from a variety of sources – everything from seashells and driftwood on a nearby beach to colorful produce at a farmer’s market to a snow-swept ski slope. “The colors of our neighborhood landscape and architecture help to build our unique definitions of local,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. It’s about celebrating where you are and becoming one with your surroundings.

Shades of grassy and yellow greens, water and sky blues and natural materials like sand and wood are beautiful building blocks for a spring color palette. If you’re like me, painting swaths of color on your walls can work in measured doses. Then add colorful decorative accents that let you to change the look of a room by season, or by mood.
