One of the best ways to get your kids interested in food—and to try new things—is to encourage them to cook with you in the kitchen. The Handstand Kids Cookbooks make the task fun and easy!
The cookbooks help kids explore different cultures, recipes and languages from the safety of your kitchen. The books are based around five characters, the Handstand Kids, who have diverse interests and backgrounds that help kids relate to them: Felix is a vegetarian, Izzy loves to cook for his diabetic sister, Ari uses her cooking skills to volunteer at kid’s charities, Gabby speaks Spanish and English, and Marvin is an aspiring executive chef. So far, there are three books in the series based on Chinese, Mexican and Italian cuisines, and each cookbook comes with a utensil relevant to the culture. The Chinese book has a takeout box and and chopsticks, the Italian book has a chef’s hat, and the Mexican cookbook has an oven mitt.
The newest, the Chinese Cookbook, ties recipes to cultural lessons. For example, the The Great Wall of Chicken Lettuce Wraps recipe ties together with a lesson on the Great Wall of China and Kung Pow! (Kung Pao Tofu), showing the characters doing karate.
“The goal of the Handstand Kids Cookbook series is to create a global community of children,” said Yvette Garfield, author and founder of the Handstand Kids Cookbook Company. “The series not only introduces kids to recipes from around the word, but encourages them to use their new skills to get involved in their community.”
